Building simulation as an assisting tool in designing an energy efficient building: a case study [LEED]

Thursday, July 30, 2009

IES consultant Michael Pollock presented this paper to an audience of simulation experts at the recent IPBSA Building Simulation conference. The abstract is below, read the full paper at http://www.iesve.com/Learning/IES-Whitepapers.

Decisions made during early stages of a building design process have substantial impact on the performance of the resulting building. Environmental performance based concern needs to be considered at the planning stage, which can help to deliver valuable information on the viability of a design. In this paper, a case study of a planned office building is presented as an example to explore an approach, which uses building simulation technology to evaluate a variety of envelope thermal characteristics and low carbon technologies in an integrated manner at the early design stage in order to assist the delivery of a sustainable green office building with a high rating of energy performance. The case study chosen is the proposed three-storey Venture Building at the West of Scotland Science Park, Glasgow.
