Material Schemes - The Revit Clinic

During project schematic phases, or for a presentation, you may wish to study alternate material appearances. One approach to this is to create separate project files solely containing the material definitions you wish to swap in.

As long as the material names are identical, you can utilize Manage > Transfer Project Standards > Materials, to overwrite the material from the alternate project to the main project. This allows an easy method to archive materials and swap them into the project when needed:

1. Create a project file[s] containing a set number of materials you wish to transfer between the projects. We will use the following materials in the example below:


2. Ensure to keep a project file for each set of different materials. This will allow you to both keep an archive copy as well as swap them and overwrite when needed.

3. In the host project, when you need to overwrite the materials in use navigate to Manage > Transfer Project Standards. Check only Materials, and choose Overwrite when prompted. I have included an example video below [no sound] of this process:
