Seth's Blog: Efficiency is free - Why BIM is better

Every day I'm astounded by the brilliance of Seth Godin.  The fact that his thoughts can relate to so many industries and people is a testament to his wisdom.  So, what's wrong with today's design and construction process?  Well, if you don't already know the answer, you could be part of the problem.

The only way to survive is to embrace the workflow and processes of using technology to increase efficiency.  There's no better tool for that in the AEC world more than Revit and Navisworks (along with a number of other related tools).  The only way you can make it past the recession is through the BIM door.  How many Revit firms out there have weathered the storm better than their competitors.  The reduced labor, rework, paperwork and redlining have been replaced with using Revit to do it right the first time.

The next level of efficiency will hit estimating, energy calculations, scheduling, material deployment and field labor.  The contractors who use these tools will be unbeatable on their bids.   Just remember, as more owners get educated on BIM, resistance will be futile.

...it's cheaper to build things right the first time than it is to fix them later. Not only was quality cheaper to make, it was cheaper to sell.
...I'm struck that we need a new book, call it Efficiency is Free.
...it costs more right now. It takes planning right now. It requires change right now.
...Right now will always be difficult. But efficiency is still free.
