Revit Architecture Services & Support - How to configure and install Autodesk software

Uh, after 28 years, you'd think the process of installing software would be a tad bit easier.  Good luck getting support if you have a problem and didn't buy from your trusty local reseller.

Scenario

You have just purchased an Autodesk software license and want to install and use your product to imagine, design and create a better world.  You have prepared your system and need to configure and install your product.

Solution

Installing your Autodesk software consists of the three main steps shown in the diagram below.  This guide will take you through the second step of Configuring the installation of your Autodesk product.

Although the images show AutoCAD 2012 as an example, the concepts and procedures apply to all Autodesk 2012 products.

After preparing your system you are ready to configure and install your Autodesk software by entering the basic product and license information listed below.  This information will vary depending on the kind of installation you want to perform and the type of Autodesk software license you have purchased.

Note: If you haven't done so already, launch the Autodesk product installer by double-clicking on the Autodesk setup executable file (for software downloads) or by inserting the physical media you received (DVD/CD or USB drive) into your computer.

Select your Install Type

The first step is to select your installation type.  The following options are available from the main installation screen:

  1. Installation instructions can be set to any language by clicking on the drop down box in the upper right corner of the screen and selecting the desired language.
  2. Install Tools & Utilities gives you the option to install additional applications which can be used in conjunction with your Autodesk product.  These options vary by product so consult your product documentation to identify which ones are of interest to you.  Installing Tools & Utilities is a separate process from installing the actual product.
  3. Create Deployment is recommended for network administrators, using either a multi-seat stand-alone or network license.  In the deployment process, the installation is configured once, and then distributed efficiently to multiple users' computers.
  4. Install is recommended for individual users or small groups. This is the only valid installation type for a stand-alone license but can also be used with a multi-seat stand-alone or network license.

Accept the Autodesk Software License Agreement

The next step is to review and accept the Autodesk Software License Agreement for your product.  We recommend that you review this so that you are aware of what you can and can't do with your Autodesk product license.  You must accept this agreement before you can proceed with the installation.

  1. Choose your country or region from the drop down list and then click I Accept and Next to proceed.

Specify your License Type

Next, select the type of software license you are installing; either a Stand-Alone license or a Network license.  Note: It is important to select the correct license type as this will affect how your product is activated.

  1. Choose Stand-Alone if you have purchased a stand-alone ormulti-seat stand-alone license.
  1. Choose Network if you have purchased a network license.  You will then have to select the appropriate network license server model that you purchased with your license (Single, Distributed or Redundant) and provide the appropriate server information as pictured below.
  • Single Server Model
  • Distributed Server Model
  • Redundant Server Model

Enter your Serial Number and Product Key

Next, you will need to provide your Serial number and Product key, which you can find in a variety of locations.  If you are having trouble, read our solution on how to locate your serial number and product key.

  1. Enter your Serial number and Product key in the appropriate fields. You will see a green checkmark as confirmation that the information you entered is correct.  This step is required for both stand-alone and network license types. Click Next to proceed.

Note: The serial number and product key shown below are for example only.  A serial number with all zeroes will start your product in trial mode, which can only be used for up to 30 days (duration may vary by product).  A valid serial number and product key is required for activation.

Select the Products you Would Like to Install

The last step is to select and configure the Autodesk products you want to install.

  1. Select a product by checking the box next to each product name.  Products that are already installed on your computer will have a green check mark next to the product name and will be labeled Installed.

    1. To view the configuration options, click on the disclosure triangle just below the checkbox.  Select Custom to view the full list of subcomponents and service packs available which you can include or remove from your installation. Click the disclosure triangle again to collapse that section and return to the product list.

    1. Before proceeding with the installation, it is important to take note of the Installation path.  This tells you where your Autodesk product will be saved on your computer.  You can change this location by clicking Browse and selecting the location of your choice.  When you are ready to proceed, click Install.
    1. When the installation completes you will see a list of the products that have been installed on your computer.  ClickFinish to close the installer and complete the installation process.
