Revit Services & Support - How to Obtain a Network License File from Autodesk

You're setting up your Autodesk Network License and need to obtain a Network License file in order to configure your license server.

Setting up your Network License consists of four main steps; this guide will take you through the third step of Obtaining a Network License File from Autodesk.

Although the images in this guide show AutoCAD 2012 as an example, the concepts and procedures apply to all Autodesk 2012 products.

After planning your network and installing the Network License Manager (NLM), you will need to obtain a network license file from Autodesk, which contains important licensing and server information.  This license file is then used to configure your server so that you can run the NLM.

Obtaining a network license file consists of four simple tasks.  Click on any of them below for further explanation.

Collect License Server Info

To request a license file from Autodesk you need to collect and provide some information about your Network License server(s).

  1. First, you will need to find your Host Name and Physical Address (Host ID) for your server(s).

Learn how to find your Host Name and Physical Address.

  2. Depending on the Network Server Model you have chosen, you might also need to provide additional information as outlined below:
    • Single Server - Server Host name and Physical address only
    • Redundant Server - Server Host name and Physical address for all three servers
    • Distributed Server – Number of servers, Master server Host name and Physical address, Number of seats on the Master server, Total number of seats

Request License File

  1. Go to https://registeronce.autodesk.com.
  2. If you have already registered your product, enter yourAutodesk ID and Password and then click Login.  If you have not yet registered your product, you will need toCreate an Autodesk ID.

  1. Select the account where your product is registered and clickNext.

  1. Select the correct Operating System and enter your productserial number.  Click Next.

  1. Select the correct Network server type and provide the appropriate server information as shown below. Click Nextwhen you are ready to proceed.
  • For a Single Server, provide the Server Host name and Physical address only.

  • For a Redundant Server, provide the Server Host name and Physical address for all three servers.

  • For a Distributed Server, provide the number of servers, the Master server Host name and Physical address, the number of seats on the Master server and the total number of seats.

  1. Your license file is then issued and will be emailed to the address associated with your Autodesk ID as a ".lic" file attachment.

Note: Your license file will also appear as text in the body of the email, which you can copy and paste to a text editor and save according to the below instructions.

Save License File

Once you receive your license file, you must save it on your license server. We recommend you save your license file to the location where you installed your Network License Manager in a new folder called "Licenses".

  • Windows example:

Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\Licenses

  • Mac example:

/Users/<user id>/adsknlm

  • Linux example:

/home/<user id>/adsknlm

Note: You can name the license file anything you would like but it must have a ".lic" extension.

Confirm License File accuracy

After you have saved your license file, it is important to confirm that it contains the correct information.  The license file will only work on the machine that has the same Physical address.  If this information is not correct, the license file will not work.  If the Host Name is wrong, this can be modified in the license file, but the Physical address cannot be changed.

To confirm the accuracy of your license file:

  1. Open up the license file using a text editor (such as Notepad).

Note: Do not use Microsoft Word or any other word processing program that might modify the formatting of the license file.

  2. The first line of the license file, beginning with SERVER will list your Host Name and Physical address.

  1. Verify that the Physical address matches your server's. If it does not match, you will need to request a new license file with the correct information. When you have verified that this information is correct, you can close the license file and move onto the last step of Configuring your Server(s).
