Newforma acquires Attolist AEC-Sync Construction Software (and a little rant)

Something funky is going in. A bunch of companies are gobbling up construction and BIM software companies. Who will win this battle, considering that there aren't that many companies left o buy?  Is Autodesk or Graphisoft up for sale?  Why didn't Autodesk grab Sketchup?

My favorite is that Autodesk bought FM Desktop and then killed it soon after. Why do they have no BIM FM product today while Graphisoft has ArchiFM? Why are so few people using Buzzsaw?  Why hasn't Autodesk been able to convert the architectural world to Revit while they keep adding BIM features to AutoCAD?  Where is Revit Civil?  Civil 3D is a clunky CAD program and hard to learn from scratch. How can you call a program that designs roads a BIM product when the B is for Building.

I've never thought of this before but is Building a verb and not a noun in the Building Information Modeling acronym?  We are Building an information model. But aren't you designing it!  So it's DIM instead. Contractors are the builders, not the architects and especially not CAD operators.

Well then, it's back to a great new Newforma press release.

Manchester, NH and Denver, CO, USA—09August 2012 Newforma, Inc., a software company providing project information management(PIM) solutions to improve building and infrastructure project delivery, today announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all of the assets of Attolist, LLC, the developer of AEC-Syncweb-based construction collaboration software. The transaction is anticipated to close in August 2012. The addition of AEC-Sync's proven hosted solution to Newforma's leading enterprise solution will provide AEC/O companies an unprecedented selection of on-premise and cloud-based technologies to better manage project delivery.

Newforma's addition of the AEC-Sync software continues to build on its cloud strategy as described in its recent "PIM in the Cloud" white paper: that the business needs of architecture and engineering firms, construction companies and owners should determine the optimal technology platform to employ for project delivery. AEC-Sync is a well proven web-based construction collaboration solution that integrates information for the entire project team – designers, contractors and owners.

"The AEC-Sync software is a perfect fit for us," said Newforma Chief Executive Officer Ian Howell. "As we engaged in discussions it became apparent how aligned our vision is with regard to providing solutions to improve project delivery in the AEC/O industry. Both of our companies have similar cultures of listening to our customers and developing our software products based on solving real pain points for them. The AEC-Sync web-based construction collaboration solution complements our existing enterprise products and aligns with our strategy to offer customers both on-premise and cloud-based project information management solutions. "

"By this sale of assets to Newforma, the company will be able to continue to advance the AEC-Sync software and continue to pursue a vision of improving project delivery by hosting projects in the cloud and providing easy to use web-based process workflow. Adding our product as part of Newforma's offerings allows the company to offer an unparalleled set of solutions for the entire AEC/O industry," said Scott Baldermann, Attolist President and Founder.

AEC-Sync web-based collaboration will be offered as part of the Newforma Project Information Management Solution under the new name of Newforma® Project Cloud. This proven solution is ideal for firms that want to host a project in the cloud and use online contract administration and project collaboration functionality. Architects and engineers can continue to specify use of the AEC-Sync web based solution under its new name for inclusion in bids by contractors and to help owners achieve more predictable project delivery.
