Revit Architecture Services & Support - Some Revit component families display about the view cut plane

Published date: 2010-Apr-10
ID: TS14976948
Applies to: Autodesk® Revit® Architecture 2011-08Issue

You notice when placing Revit® component families some display about the view cut plane while others do not.

Solution

When a family is located above the View Range > Cut Plane but falls below the Top Plane, the family category will determine whether it is visible or not.
The following component family categories will appear in the view even when above the cut plane:
Casework
Generic Model
Structural Columns
Windows
In the following example the Generic Model family is above the cut plane but falls below the top plane:
The Generic Model family category will appear in the floor plan view. If the family category is changed > Lighting Fixtures, the family will not be visible in the floor plan view:

A sneak peak about 2011

This has nothing to do with Revit.  I just wanted you to know that January 1st, 2011 is on a Saturday next year.
Now, let's talk about Revit 2010.  Last year, Autodesk has a press day on February 6th, 2009 and revealed the new features of the Revit 2010 products.  You can visit www.Revit2010.com and relive the magic. It was right here that all of you got to see details of the new features  including your favorite, the Ribbon.   I posted the brochures on 2/13/09 and on 3/20, posted the first release dates for the Autodesk products.  On 4/2/09, I posted the actual release date of Revit Architecture 2010 as being 4/16/09.  Finally, on 4/8/09, I posted the subscription portal link to download Revit before the DVD arrived on your desk.
All I can tell you is about what's happened in the past.  The future is a secret.  I will tell you I was the first person on the planet to make a blog post about all of the information above.  For the randomness of it, I highly recommend that you go to www.revit3d.com/subscribe so you can have up to the minute information about all things Revit.  You can follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/Revit3D for even faster updates from my blog.
Oh, there is one thing I can tell you about 2011.  It's in 322 days from now.

April 16, 2010 is in 63 days.  That has no bearing on anything, but it's the one year anniversary from the release of Revit 2010 products.  You can always click on the www.Revit2011.com link if you think it will help.

Revit OpEd: Autodesk AEC Marketing - Revit 2011 Customer Examples

Addendum 2/14/10:  If you got here by searching for Revit 2011, you're in luck.  I'll be providing up to the minute information as it becomes available.  Last year, I was the first to publish the first video of Revit 2010 and I was the first to publish the release date.
Go to www.revit3d.com/subscribe to get instant updates.  Also, you can visit www.revit2011.com which is Revit3D.com with a filter for all posts tagged 2011.

***********************************************************************

I'm reposting this one from Steve Stafford's RevitOpEd blog mostly because he mentioned Revit 2011 so I get to roll out my www.revit2011.com domain name. Don't bother clicking it as it just redirects back to Revit3D/BIMBoom. It is great though that we're starting the countdown for the next version of Revit. Hopefully all of your wishlist items will be addressed.

Autodesk AEC Marketing - Revit 2011 Customer Examples
I was contacted by Kyle Herring, he is a Solutions Marketing Manager with Autodesk. They have recently initiated a search for customer data sets that can be used to create marketing materials to support the 2011 release of Revit platform. He wanted to assure me, and you, that 'we’re not selling anything here, we simply see this as a great opportunity for Revit users to display the work that they do to a large audience in the AEC community.'

If you and your firm are interested in being part of this effort you can contact Kyle directly via EMAIL.

Revit 2010 Tech Tip - The 3GB switch and Revit (& nothing about the Ribbon switch)

The 3GB switch and Revit®

Published date: 2009-Apr-16
ID: TS1060353

Applies to:
AutoCAD Revit MEP Suite 2009
Autodesk® AutoCAD® Revit® Series—Systems Plus 2
Autodesk® Revit® Architecture 2010
Revit® Architecture 2009
Revit® Architecture 2008
Autodesk® Revit® Building 9
Autodesk® Revit® MEP 2010
Autodesk® Revit® Structure 2010
Revit® Structure 2009
Revit® Structure 2008
Autodesk® Revit® Structure 4
Autodesk® Revit® Structure 3

Issue

You want to know more about enabling the 3GB switch to improve Revit® performance.

Solution

In an operating system, many different rules and settings are used to manage system resources to their fullest capacity and ensure that all applications/processes are given equal access to those resources. For example, operating systems are used to control the amount of total memory that any single application/process can use. In Windows XP, the default value for total memory is set to 2GB. If an application/process accesses more than 2GB of total memory, the application/process will be immediately terminated by the operating system.

Because total memory is a system setting, it can be changed by the user or administrator. In Windows XP with SP2, users can "flip" a 3GB switch to increase the total amount of memory that an application/process can use to 3GB. The 3GB switch can be beneficial for memory intensive programs. Typically, the 3GB switch does not need to be enabled for Revit®. However, there are some circumstances where Revit may benefit from the increase in total memory.

Who Should Consider Enabling the 3GB Switch?

In Revit, the size of a model determines the amount of memory required. If you are designing large models, you should consider enabling the 3GB switch. However, you should only enable the 3GB switch if more than the 2GB default of total memory is required.

Revit crashing frequently at unpredictable times is an indication that the 3GB switch is required. To determine whether a recent crash is due to memory issues, open the journal file that corresponds to the crashed Revit session. Journal files can be found in the Journals folder in your Revit program directory. Look for the lines that report memory statistics at the bottom of the journal file. An example of the memory statistics in a journal file are shown below.

  • System Memory Statistics:
  • Total RAM: 2095192 Kb
  • Available RAM: 1183664 Kb
  • Total VM: 2097024 Kb
  • Available VM: 79072 Kb

Total VM (virtual memory) represents the Windows XP VM hard limit that is allowed for Revit. Available VM is the amount of VM that remains before Revit hits the hard limit. In this example, Available VM is running low, and it is likely that the hard limit will be exceeded.

Whether Revit is crashing or not, you should understand the limitations of your system configuration. To do so, you first need to identify how much memory is being used for Revit. Follow these steps:

  1. Open your Revit project.
  2. Right-click on the Windows Task Bar at the bottom of the screen. Click Task Manager.
  3. In the Windows Task Manager, click on the Processes tab.
  4. If the VM Size column is not displayed on the Processes tab, click Select Columns on the View menu.
  5. In the Select Columns dialog box, select the Virtual Memory Size check box. Click OK.

  6. Sort the processes by clicking on the VM Size column header. Locate the Revit process.

Note the VM Size for the Revit process. If this number is close to 2GB at the beginning of a Revit session, enabling the 3GB switch will greatly reduce the chance that the 2GB ceiling will be reached while you are using Revit. If this number reaches 2GB, the Revit session will be terminated automatically.

Enabling the 3GB switch will not eliminate the possibility that Revit will crash due to memory shortages. However, the chances of a crash occurring will be reduced.

Before You Enable the 3GB Switch

You will need to verify that the paging file size is optimized for your system. The paging file should at least be the size that is recommended for Windows and at most the size should be two times the amount of installed RAM. Follow these steps:

  1. On the Start menu (Windows), click Settings > Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click System.
  3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.

  4. Under Performance, click Settings.
  5. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
  6. On the Advanced tab, under Virtual Memory, click Change.
  7. In the Virtual Memory dialog box, change the Initial and Max values to 4092 (2 * 2GB) for a 2GB machine.

  8. Click Set.
  9. Click OK to close each dialog box.

Enabling the 3GB Switch

  1. Right-click My Computer. Click Properties.
  2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
  3. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
  4. In the Startup and Recovery dialog box, under System startup, click Edit. The Windows boot.ini file will be opened in Notepad.
  5. Save a renamed copy of your boot.ini file somewhere on your computer in case you need to revert back to your original version of the file. Note: Boot.ini files may be different from computer to computer.
  6. Highlight the following line in the boot.ini file:

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

  7. Copy (Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) the line just below the original. Note: Your exact text string may be different from the text string in this document. So be sure to copy the text string from your boot.ini file, not the text string shown here.
  8. Modify the copied line to include “ /3GB”, as shown in the example below. Note: Do not overwrite any existing lines.

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /3GB /fastdetect

  9. Save the boot.ini file and close Notepad.
  10. Click OK to close each dialog box.
  11. Reboot your computer.
  12. During startup, select the 3GB option. If you do not select the 3GB option, the system will default to the 2GB total memory setting.

If there are problems at startup, you may need to update some of your drivers.

Verifying that the 3GB switch is enabled

Start a Revit session, and then open the new journal text file that was created. The Journals folder can usually be found in the C:\Program Files\Autodesk Revit Building X\Journals directory. Note: Revit Building is used as an example. If you are using Revit Structure, the folder will be named "Revit Structure." If you are using Revit Systems, the folder will be named "Revit Systems." Near the beginning of the journal, check to make sure that the TotalVirtualMemorySize equals approximately 31456000.

Conclusion

While the 3GB switch will help achieve a boost in Revit productivity for some users, it is important to note that in the majority of scenarios this will not be beneficial. So you should use discretion when you are trying to decide whether to enable the 3GB switch or not.

Enabling the 3GB switch can be beneficial to system performance. However, maximizing the affect of the 3GB switch may also require changing system settings and installing additional RAM.

You can use the /userva=xxxx switch for more precise tuning of user and kernel virtual memory space in the Windows Server 2003 family. Use this new switch with the /3GB switch in the Boot.ini file to tune the User-mode space to a value between 2 and 3 gigabytes (GB), with the difference (3,072 less xxxx) being returned to Kernel mode. Note that xxxx is expressed in megabytes (MB).

The following sample Boot.ini file demonstrates how to use the new switch to tune a computer to allocate 2,900 MB of User-mode virtual memory and 1,196 MB of Kernel-mode virtual memory. This increases the available kernel space by 172 MB:

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=30
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows Server 2003" /fastdetect /3GB /Userva=2900

Revit Architecture 2010 - Conceptual Massing Help File - 67 page pdf

8am Wednesday Update:I'm directly emailing the link to existing subscribers NOW. There was a space in the PDF file name so some of you came back here when clicking the link. Oh, how I love technology.
11pm Update:
1. If you're not an email subscriber, after you subscribe you'll receive an email with a link to a special hidden web page with the PDF link.
2. If you are an email subscriber, the link included in tonight's blog email, was a direct download link to the PDF file. I tried it 5 times and it worked. Try to copy the link into your browser if it didn't download the PDF. The file name will look similar to http://www.revit3d.com/R2010/Revit3D%20-Conceptual%20Massing_df735wp5_129cz5kzRVT.pdf (last 3 characters have been changed to not make this too easy).
3. Any questions, just email me (if you're a current subscriber). Otherwise, see item 1 and it's pretty self explanatory.

Here's a little present for my subscription customers.

It's the Revit Architecture 2010 Conceptual Massing Tutorial and it's 67 pages of how to use the new massing tool.

The link was sent to my blog subscribers. Kind of like Autodesk Subscription. Special benefits for subscibers.
Only difference is your only cost here is your valuable time in reading my blog posts. I just removed the live link right after the email was sent. Lucky for some of you my internet connection went down and it was up long than I wanted.

Why for subscribers only? Because I want blog subscribers and my current 650 readers get something special for reading my blog. Anyone wanting the incredible 67 page document, can subscribe to my blog at this link.

After you subscribe, you'll be receiving instructions on how to access the PDF file. Of course you can unsubscribe after that, but you'd hurt my feelings and I'll have your email address from some future secret
diabolical plot to stalk you...or maybe not....you should just want to stay subscribed for future benefits and valuable information.

I'm at 264 blog posts already for 2009. That averages out to over 900 posts/year at this rate. That's why you should subscribe anyhow. You just can't keep up by visiting here periodically. The Revit Clinic: New way to access tools!

Great post I'm repeating from The Revit Clinic: New way to access tools!

New way to access tools!

There is a new method to access tools in 2010. In previous releases you could use your keyboard to enter a keyboard shortcut key. Like ZE to Zoom your view to its extents. We still have these keyboard shortcuts in 2010, but we also have Key tips.

Open Revit and press the Alt Key.

You will see this:

Key_tips

Little letters appear above the QAT and the Ribbon Tab names. These are key tips. If you press them, you will open up additonaal key tips or use a tool. Here I pressed H to display the tips under the Home Tab.

Home_tab

This is just another way to access tools. It is important to note though that Keyboard shortcuts are not the same as keytips and sometimes use different letters. Also, Key tips are only available if you press Alt, while key board shortcuts are always available.

Interesting Blog post from Phil Read about Revit 2010 Massing Tool - Arch | Tech: Update

"Update"

Topics of the blog post:
1) Building Masses.
2) Present Geometry Toolset.
3) Present Limitations in 2010 Massing.
